Golden Eagles Win And Clinch Spot In CCAA Tourney

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team made sure the fifth time was the charm.

The Golden Eagles earned their way into the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a hard-earned 75-60 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (16-10, 13-9 CCAA) put an end to its frustrating four-game losing streak that kept the Golden Eagles having to battle for a spot in the six-team tourney all the way to the final day.

The Golden Eagles finished in a four-way tie for third place in the conference and earned the No. 5 seed based on tiebreakers. Cal State L.A. will face No. 4 seed UC San Diego in a first-round game at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The Golden Eagles had their hands full on Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino (9-16, 8-14 CCAA), which came into the game riding a five-game winning streak. Cal State L.A. shot an efficient 52.7 percent and also enjoyed a 44-36 rebounding edge to earn the win.

Paige Melville led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points, while Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had 17 points and eight rebounds. Tina Fantroy had 16 points and four rebounds and Destinee La Fountain, the conference's leading rebounder, had a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Alexcia Mack had a game-high 22 points for the Coyotes, while Jazzmyn Davis added 13 points.

Cal State L.A. made 29-of-55 of its field-goal attempts and limited Cal State San Bernardino to just 33.3 percent shooting (22-of-66). Melville had both of the Golden Eagles' 3-pointers, while Cal State San Bernardino was 4-of-17 from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-27 from the free-throw line, while the Coyotes were 12-of-15.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five points in the first half, 15-10, before going on a 18-4 run that swung the game into their favor. A pair of free throws by Melville gave the Golden Eagles a 28-19 lead with 3:30 to go and a layup by Okungbowa gave the Golden Eagles a 30-23 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles led by nine points early in the second half, but the Coyotes pulled to within four points, 43-29, with 11:20 remaining after a layup by Davis. The Golden Eagles responded with layups by Okungbowa and Tina Fantroy to boost the lead back to eight points.

Cal State San Bernardino closed to within seven points, 57-50, after a three-point play by Mack, but the Golden Eagles countered with a pair of free throws by Tina Fantroy and a jumper by Belt to stretch the lead to 61-50, with five minutes to go. A 3-pointer by Mack brought the Coyotes to within 61-53, but baskets by Belt and Kaija Powell after a steal by Faith Fantroy extended the lead to 12 points, 67-55, with 3:55 to go and the Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. honored its three seniors – Destinee La Fountain, Richelle Najera and Alisha Belt – in pregame ceremonies.
