Golden Eagles Drop Third Straight Conference Game

Box Score POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was only half good for a third consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association game.

The Golden Eagles lost a halftime lead for the third straight game, this time falling to first-place Cal Poly Pomona, 65-54, Saturday in Kellogg Gym. Cal State L.A. (15-9, 12-8 CCAA) missed out on a chance to regain a share of second place with Chico State and instead finds itself in a three-way tie for third with Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC San Diego.

The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament. Cal Poly Pomona (20-4, 17-3 CCAA) wrapped up the No. 1 seed for the tourney and the conference regular-season title.

Cal State L.A. held a 31-26 halftime lead, but was outscored, 39-23, in the second half. The Golden Eagles were held without a point over the final four minutes of the game.

Paige Melville had 11 points for the Golden Eagles, while Destinee La Fountain had 10 points and eight rebounds. Tina Fantroy had nine points and Richelle Najera had six points and seven rebounds.

Ariel Marsh had a game-high 26 points for the Broncos, while Jada Blackwell had 12 points and Ashley Lovett had 10 points.

Cal State L.A. shot just 32.8 percent for the game (21-of-64), while Cal Poly Pomona shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56). The Broncos had a big edge in 3-point shooting (9-of-19) to the Golden Eagles' 4-of-15. The Golden Eagles were 8-of-11 from the free-throw line, while the Broncos were 14-of-23. Cal Poly Pomona made eight free throws in the final 1:11 to put the game away.

The Golden Eagles started well and opened up a 9-3 lead after a game-opening 3-pointer by Melville, a layup by Melville, two free throws by La Fountain and a layup by Melville. A layup by Aiwekhoe Okungbowa gave the Golden Eagles a 15-9 lead. After Cal Poly Pomona surged to a 23-21 lead, a layup by Tina Fantroy and back-to-back 3-pointers by Samantha Lee gave the Golden Eagles a 29-23 lead. A layup by Najera gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 31-24, in the final minute of the first half and Cal State L.A. settled for a 31-26 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles still held a 44-40 lead after a layup by Tina Fantroy with 11:19 to go, but Cal Poly Pomona went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good. Cal State L.A. stayed within striking distance and a a 3-pointer by Tina Fantroy and a three-point play by La Fountain kept the Golden Eagles within 57-54, with 4:32 to go. That, however, was the last basket of the game by either team. Cal Poly Pomona completed the scoring by making eight free throws down the stretch.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against UC San Diego in the Eagles Nest as part of Homecoming Week.
