Box Score ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw another second-half lead get away from it Thursday night in a tough California Collegiate Athletic Association loss at Humboldt State.
The Golden Eagles led by eight points at halftime and by 12 points with 18 minutes to play, but could not hang on in a 66-62 loss to the 'Jacks Thursday in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (15-8, 12-7 CCAA) slipped into a tie for third place in the CCAA with Cal State Dominguez Hills, one-half game behind Chico State. The Golden Eagles and Toros have three games remaining, while the Wildcats have four games left.
Paige Melville had 18 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Alisha Belt had 16 points and seven rebounds.
Destinee La Fountain had 11 points and six rebounds.
Kersey Wilcox had 16 points to lead Humboldt State (12-11, 9-10 CCAA). Amanda Kunst had 15 points and Jain Tuey added 12 points.
Cal State L.A., which was ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II West Region in the official poll released on Wednesday, shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52), while Humboldt State shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60). The Golden Eagles were only 4-of-14 from 3-point range and missed all five attempts in the second half, while Humboldt State was 7-of-25. Cal State L.A. was 14-of-18 from the free-throw line, while Humboldt State was 9-of-13.
The Golden Eagles had a slight 36-35 rebounding edge, while committing 13 turnovers to only eight for the 'Jacks.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the first half and took a 35-27 halftime lead after a basket by Belt.
Cal State L.A. then opened up the second half with basket by Belt and La Fountain to take its biggest lead of the game, 39-27, with 18:12 remaining. Humboldt State, though, went on an 18-6 run to catch the Golden Eagles at 45-45 and the game was close the rest of the way.
A basket by Melville, a free throw by
Kaija Powell and a basket by Belt gave the Golden Eagles a 57-52 lead and another basket by Belt put the Golden Eagles ahead, 61-55, with 5:23 to play. The Golden Eagles, though, managed only a free throw by La Fountain down the stretch and Humboldt State rallied for the win. Two free throws by Wilcox pushed the 'Jacks ahead, 63-61 with 2:02 to play. La Fountain hit a free throw to make it 63-62 with 1:36 to go, but the Golden Eagles were blanked the rest of the way. Wilcox hit a layup to make it 65-62 and a late free throw accounted for the final margin.
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had six points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at first-place Cal Poly Pomona.
