Golden Eagles Win Fifth Straight By Beating Wildcats

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team picked an opportune time for one of its most impressive victories of the season.

The Golden Eagles snapped Chico State's seven-game winning streak in a well-played and entertaining 83-71 victory Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-6, 12-5 CCAA) won its fifth straight contest and remain in a second-place tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Destinee La Fountain had a sensational game with 26 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots. Paige Melville contributed 14 points, Aiwekhoe Okungbowa nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds and Tina Fantroy had another solid game with 10 points.

Chico State (15-6, 11-6 CCAA) got a team-high 21 points from Hannah Womack and 13 points and five assists from Jazmine Miller.

The dominant player in the game was La Fountain, who was 10-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line in addition to the rebounds and blocks.

Cal State L.A. had an efficient offensive performance and shot 53.7 percent for the game, including 56 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 5-of-13 from 3-point range.

Chico State, meanwhile, shot just 36.5 percent, although the Wildcats were 11-of-25 from 3-point range and knocked down six of their 12 attempts in the second half.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 41-37, but committed only 13 turnovers to 17 for the Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles were 20-of-31 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats were 14-of-22.

The Golden Eagles trailed only once, at 7-5, after a 3-pointer by Womack, but a layup by Okungbowa and a 3-pointer by Tina Fantroy erased that deficit. The game was tied at 10-10 before La Fountain scored three consecutive baskets to put the Golden Eagles ahead by six points.

The Golden Eagles allowed a 3-pointer by Miller that tied it at 17-17 before embarking on an 11-0 run that gave them the lead for good. Fantroy scored on a layup to start the run and Alisha Belt followed with a 3-pointer. La Fountain hit a pair of free throws, Belt hit a pair of free throws and Melville hit a jumper after a steal by Kaija Powell to give the Golden Eagles a 28-17 lead.

A 3-pointer by Melville gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the first half, 42-28, and they settled for a 42-30 halftime lead.

Chico State rallied to within five points after a 3-pointer by Annie Ward with 15 minutes to go, but the Golden Eagles responded with six straight points on a free throw by Fantroy, a layup by La Fountain and a 3-pointer by Samantha Lee to boost the lead back to 56-45.

Chico State made another run to close to within seven points, 58-51, but a jumper by Lee and 3-pointer by Melville got the lead back to 12 points, 63-51, with 8:40 to go. The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead, 73-56, after a layup by Fantroy with 5:50 to go and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State Stanislaus.
