LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw a double-digit second-half lead vanish, but
Tina Fantroy made sure the Golden Eagles still went home celebrating.
Fantroy hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Golden Eagles to a thrilling 61-58 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (12-6, 9-5 CCAA) completed a weekend sweep and kept pace with the lead pack in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles are in a three-way tie for third place with Chico State and Cal State East Bay, just one game back of second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Cal State L.A. needed Fantroy's late heroics after Cal State Monterey Bay scored four quick points to tie the game in the final minute With her team trailing 58-54, Ashley Morgan made a free throw to make it 58-55. She missed the second free throw, but Chezla Self got the rebound and Angelique Bailey hit a 3-pointer to tie it with 36 seconds remaining.
Cal State Monterey Bay got the ball back with a chance to take the lead, but stout Cal State L.A. defense caused a turnover with six seconds to go. After a Golden Eagle timeout,
Paige Melville brought the ball upcourt and passed the ball to Fantroy, who lined up the 3-pointer in front of the Cal State L.A. bench and hit nothing but net as the horn sounded.
Melville finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while Fantroy finished with 14 points.
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had 12 points and five rebounds and
Destinee La Fountain had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Jenna Bandy had 17 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (4-13, 1-13 CCAA), while Morgan finished with 16 points. Bailey had 11 points and five rebounds.
Cal State L.A. shot just 37.8 percent (17-of-45) and was just 3-of-13 from 3-point range. Cal State Monterey Bay shot only 33.9 percent (19-of-56), but was 8-of-25 from 3-point range.
Cal State L.A. had a 37-34 rebounding edge and both teams committed 12 turnovers.
The Golden Eagles were 24-of-29 from the free-throw line, but missed a pair of one-and-ones late that left the door open for a late Cal State Monterey Bay rally. The Otters were 12-of-17.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the game, but the Otters were always within striking distance. Cal State L.A. took a 35-29 halftime lead and took a 45-31 lead early in the second half after a 3-pointer by Melville. A fastbreak basket by Fantroy made it 50-36 with 11:50 to go and Cal State Monterey Bay then began steadily chipping away at the deficit.
A pair of free throws by Fantroy kept the advantage at seven points, 56-49, with three minutes to play, but Bailey knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 56-52 game. Melville and Morgan exchanged baskets to make it 58-54 and, after a missed free throw on the front end of a one-and-one, the Otters took advantage with their game-tying possession.
Another missed free throw gave the Otters the chance to take the lead, but the turnover got the ball back to the Golden Eagles with just enough time for Fantroy to hit the game-winner.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road game at Sonoma State.
