Golden Eagles Get Hot And Beat Humboldt State

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team finally found its offensive rhythm in time to post a much-needed California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles used a sizzling 3-point display to pull away from Humboldt State Saturday night in a 77-63 win in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-5, 6-4 CCAA) snapped a two-game losing streak and earned a weekend split in conference play.

The Golden Eagles erased an 11-point first-half deficit with a stunning 27-0 run that started in the final six minutes of the opening half and continued through the first three minutes of the second half.

Cal State L.A. was 10-of-20 from 3-point range and knocked down seven 3-pointers in nine attempts in the second half. Overall, the Golden Eagles shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) in the second half and 43.9 percent (25-of-57) for the game.

Humboldt State (7-7, 4-6 CCAA) was on fire early and opened up leads as large as 11 points in the first half. The 'Jacks wound up shooting 38.6 percent (22-of-57) and were just 6-of-21 from 3-point range.

Paige Melville had a game-high 21 points for the Golden Eagles and was 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Tina Fantroy had a big game as well with 14 points and Destinee La Fountain had 11 points and 20 rebounds.

Melville had 19 of her 21 points in the second half.

Amanda Kunst had a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds for Humboldt State, while Kersey Wilcox had 13 points and Megan Shields had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Cal State L.A. also got nine points and three rebounds from Alisha Belt, eight points and seven rebounds from Kaija Powell and seven points from Faith Fantroy.

The Golden Eagles were better at the free-throw line than they were on Friday and made 17-of-25 attempts. Humboldt State was just 13-of-23. Cal State L.A. had a 45-33 rebounding edge and both teams had 14 turnovers.

Humboldt State started quickly and opened up a 24-13 lead with six minutes remaining in the opening half, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with a game-changing 17-0 run to take a 30-24 halftime lead. A free throw by Powell gave the Golden Eagles the lead at 25-24, a basket by Belt made it 26-24 and a 3-pointer by Tina Fantroy made it 30-24.

The Golden Eagles continued their run by scoring the first 10 points of the second half. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Melville started the half and baskets by Belt and La Fountain gave the Golden Eagles a 40-24 lead.

Another 3-pointer by Fantroy gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 43-26.

Humboldt State responded with a run of its own and narrowed the deficit to just seven points, 53-46, with 8:30 to go. Melville then hit another 3-pointer to stop the surge. A layup by La Fountain got the lead back to 15 points, 62-47, before Humboldt State made another run and closed the gap to 65-57, with 3:50 to go. This time, Tina Fantroy responded with a 3-pointer to make it 68-57 with 3:20 to go and Cal State L.A. led by at least eight points the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
