Box Score CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team had its chances at completing a California Collegiate Athletic Association road sweep, but the Golden Eagles fell short against the defending CCAA regular-season champions.
The Golden Eagles led by five points at halftime, but were outscored by 15 in the second half and fell to Chico State, 68-58, Saturday night in Acker Gym. Cal State L.A. (8-4, 5-3 CCAA) trailed by just three points late in the game, but the Wildcats (8-4, 4-4 CCAA) scored the final seven points to put the game away.
Paige Melville scored 17 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Destinee La Fountain had eight points and nine rebounds.
Bree Parsons had eight points and six rebounds and
Kaija Powell had seven points.
Jazmine Miller had a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds to lead the Wildcats, while Annie Ward had 17 points.
Cal State L.A. shot just 32.1 percent (17-of-53), while Chico State shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-18 from 3-point range, while the Wildcats were 7-of-22. Melville hit three 3-pointers,
Emily Tevez hit two and Parsons hit the other. Cal State L.A. was just 18-of-27 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line, while Chico State was a more efficient 15-of-19 (78.9 percent).
The Golden Eagles struggled mightily on offense in the second half and made only 5-of-22 from the field in the final 20 minutes.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 48-40, and committed 11 turnovers to only six for the Wildcats.
Cal State L.A. trailed early, but took a 19-12 lead after a 9-0 run accomplished by a basket by Powell, a basket by Melville, a 3-pointer by Melville and a basket by Parsons.

Richelle Najera and a pair of free throws by
Olivia Sheehan gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 26-15, with 3:45 left in the half, but Chico State cut the deficit to 34-29 by halftime and then scored the first seven points of the second half to take the lead. A 3-pointer by Melville regained the lead for the Golden Eagles at 39-38 and a layup by Melville and a free throw by Parsons gave Cal State L.A. a 44-40 edge. Chico State then surged to the lead before a basket by
Alisha Belt tied it for the final time at 49-49 with 8:58 remaining.
Chico State built leads as large as seven points before two free throws by La Fountain and two by Powell made it 59-56 with three minutes left. Chico State scored the next nine points to put the game away.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday, Jan. 17, with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona.
