Golden Eagles Start Weekend With A Big CCAA Win

Box Score TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got its weekend off to a good start with an impressive California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and went on to a 68-57 win over Cal State Stanislaus Friday in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State L.A. (8-3, 5-2 CCAA) remained one game out of first in the CCAA and dropped Cal State Stanislaus (8-3, 5-2 CCAA) out of a share of the conference lead.

Paige Melville led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points, while Aiwekhoe Okungbowa added 15 points. Destinee La Fountain had a big game, scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds, while Alisha Belt also scored 10 points.

Lauren Godde led Cal State Stanislaus with 17 points, while Riley Holladay had 15 points and seven rebounds.

Cal State L.A. shot 51 percent for the game (25-of-49) and limited Cal State Stanislaus to just 32.8 percent shooting (21-of-64). The Golden Eagles held a 44-32 rebounding edge and won despite 27 turnovers to 19 for the Warriors.

The Golden Eagles trailed only once, 1-0, and opened up their first double-digit lead at 17-5 following consecutive baskets by Kaija Powell, Melville and Okungbowa. Two free throws by Emily Tevez and a basket by Melville gave the Golden Eagles a 31-19 lead and Cal State L.A. settled for a 31-21 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 12-4 run and opened up an 18-point lead, 43-25, after two free throws by Powell. An Okungbowa steal and layup made it 50-32 and a layup by Melville gave the Golden Eagles a 58-40 lead with 6:21 remaining.

Cal State Stanislaus, though, sliced the lead to seven points, 62-55, after a 3-pointer by Holladay with 2:34 remaining. The Golden Eagles responded with a basket by Belt on their next possession and got a free throw by Melville to boost the lead back to 65-55. A layup by La Fountain gave the Golden Eagles a 67-57 lead with 31 seconds left and put the game out of reach.

Powell finished with nine points, three rebounds and three assists.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Chico State.
