Golden Eagles Lose Third In A Row At San Francisco

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team continued its early struggles in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Golden Eagles got a game-tying goal in the 80th minute only to see San Francisco State come right back with the game-winner in the 82nd minute of a 2-1 decision at Cox Stadium. Cal State L.A. (2-3, 0-3 CCAA) has lost three straight games after picking up wins in its first two non-conference games.

Cal State L.A. endured a frustrating afternoon in its first road match of the season. The Golden Eagles had a 24-6 advantage in shots, including a 15-4 edge in the second half. Making matters worse, the Gators were a player short from the 60th minute on, yet still found a way to score a pair of goals. Cal State L.A. also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks with all five corners coming in the second half.

Both San Francisco State goals came after Cal State L.A. fouls. The first goal came after the Gators were able to sustain some pressure in the Golden Eagle side. Justine Hernandez eventually sent a ball into the box, where Elizet Ceja was able to knock it just inside the far post in the 71st minute.

Cal State L.A. was able to turn up the pressure at San Francisco State's end and finally got the equalizer. Norie Pablo set up the goal with a good run near the goal and her cross to Amalia Arvidsson was expertly re-directed into the Gator goal in the 80th minute. The goal was Arvidsson's fourth of the season.

The tie was short-lived, however, because San Francisco State, despite being a player down, capitalized on an ill-timed Cal State L.A. foul about 25 yards from the goal. Stephanie Vanni blasted a shot that found the upper corner of the net and the Gators took the lead for good in the 82nd minute, just 2:56 after Arvidsson's goal.

Cal State L.A. had some looks at tying the game a second time, most notably a bid by Darci Smith off a corner kick in the 86th minute that was cleared away by the San Francisco State defense. Another corner kick came up empty. A final bid by Alexandra Barrett-Scherrer in the final minute sailed just over the crossbar.

Amanda Johnson made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Allison Land made 11 saves for the Gators. Shea Richards and Andrea Lammers had four shots each for Cal State L.A.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay beginning at 11:30 a.m.
