Golden Eagles Post Wire-To-Wire Win Over Otters

Box Score SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team took a quick lead in its first road game of the season and the Golden Eagles led wire-to-wire in a California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles opened up an 11-point halftime lead, built advantages as large as 17 points in the second half and went on to a 72-62 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday in the Kelp Bed. Cal State L.A. (4-1, 2-0 CCAA) bounced back nicely from its first loss of the season last Saturday.

Paige Melville had another outstanding game and led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points. She made five field goals in six attempts, including both of her 3-point tries. She was also a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. Brittany Pennell had 12 points and four rebounds and Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had 10 points and five rebounds.

Angelique Bailey had 16 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (3-1, 0-1 CCAA). Ashley Morgan had 14 points.

Destinee La Fountain had nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Tina Fantroy also had nine points. Alisha Belt had eight points and eight rebounds.

Cal State L.A. shot 42.6 percent for the game (23-of-54) and made five of its seven 3-point tries. Melville and Pennell each hit two 3-pointers, while Emily Tevez also hit a 3-pointer. The Golden Eagles held Cal State Monterey Bay to just 35.7 percent shooting (20-of-61) and the Otters were 10-of-24 from 3-point range.

The Golden Eagles were 21-of-27 from the free-throw line, while the Otters were 12-of-17.

The Golden Eagles held a 40-39 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 19 for the Otters.

Cal State L.A. built its largest lead of the game, 59-42, with 6:38 to go and kept a safe margin the remainder of the game.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday night at Cal State East Bay.
