Box Score CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team found itself in a rare scoring frenzy Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles erased an early 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals and then held on for a 4-3 victory on Toro Field. Cal State L.A. (7-4-3, 5-4-3 CCAA) ran its unbeaten streak to six games with the win. The Golden Eagles are 4-0-2 over that span.
Megan Ollar,
Andrea Lammers,
Shereen Khoobbagha and
Veronika Steen scored goals for the Golden Eagles, while
Shea Richards had a pair of assists and
Heather Williams also added an assist.
Yi Du made one save for the Golden Eagles.
Both teams had 15 shots each with the Golden Eagles holding a 10-7 edge in the first half. Cal State L.A. held a 3-1 lead at halftime and held off the Toros in the second half. Cal State L.A. had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks in the surprisingly high-scoring game.
The four goals matched a season-high for the Golden Eagles, achieved first in the season opener against Saint Martin's. The three goals allowed also tied a season-high.
Cal State L.A. had scored one goal in each of its previous four games since its 3-2 win at Sonoma State.
After Sami Feinstein gave the Toros a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, the Golden Eagles struck for a pair of goals in a four-minute span to take the lead. Ollar notched her first goal of the season with an assist from Richards. She got a pass from Richards at the outside of the box and knocked a shot into the net. Ollar has now scored in three straight games against the Toros. She had the only goals in both 1-0 wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills last season.
Lammers then gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead in the 26th minute with her fifth goal of the season. Williams picked up her team-high eighth assist after her long pass found an open Lammers, who did the rest.
Cal State L.A. then took a 3-1 lead in the 38th minute when Khoobbagha struck for her first goal of the season. She headed in a pass from Richards after a long throw-in.
Things got interesting in the second half. The Toros made it 3-2 in the 48th minute when Melanie Desalvo scored on a penalty kick.
The Golden Eagles regained their two-goal lead one minute later when Steen scored her second goal of the season. She connected on an unbelievable shot from outside the top of the box that hit the crossbar and went in to make it 4-2.
The Toros cut the lead down to 4-3 in the 56th minute on a goal by Olivia Patterson.
Cal State L.A.'s defense took it from there. Du made a save on a header by Jessica Parker in the 88th minute for the final shot of the game.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
