POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team used an early goal and an outstanding defensive effort to post an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles got a goal from Norie Pablo in the 14th minute and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Friday at Kellogg Field. Cal State L.A. (6-4-3, 4-4-3 CCAA) ran its unbeaten streak to five matches and picked up three big points in the process.
The Golden Eagles avenged an early-season 1-0 loss to Cal Poly Pomona (5-4-4, 3-4-4 CCAA) and jumped past the Broncos in the tight CCAA South Division standings. Cal State L.A. is now tied with UC San Diego for second place in the division with 15 points.
Cal State L.A. got the only goal it needed in the 14th minute when Pablo scored her second goal of the season. Stephanie Lopez and Heather Williams connected on passes and Pablo one-timed a shot from 15 yards out just inside the far post.
Williams picked up her team-leading seventh assist, while Lopez registered her second assist.
Yi Du made two saves in goal for the Golden Eagles and posted the shutout, her fourth and the team's sixth.
Both teams ended up with 10 shots and the Golden Eagles had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Shea Richards was a threat throughout the match and ended up with three shots, while Williams had two shots.
There were only five shots on goal in the game. The Golden Eagles had three, two of which were saved by Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Alex Abbott. Du stopped both Cal Poly Pomona tries on frame.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
