POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to eight on Friday, but the Golden Eagles had to work hard for a tie with Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles were unable to break the Broncos' defense and had to settle for a 0-0 tie in California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Kellogg Field. Cal State L.A. (9-1-3, 7-1-3 CCAA) improved to 5-0-3 in its last eight games and remained in second place in the CCAA South Division, one point behind Chico State and one point ahead of UC San Diego.
Mike Beigarten made three saves for the Golden Eagles to pick up his seventh shutout and the team's seventh. Andrew Todd made three saves for Cal Poly Pomona.
The Broncos had a slim 13-12 advantage in shots, while Cal State L.A. had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Jordan Payne had four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Sigifredo Torres had three shots, including one on frame. Joshua Cortez also had three shots, including two on goal. He also had the Golden Eagles' final bid in the 109th minute that went wide.
The Golden Eagles had only three shots in the first period, but doubled that output in the second half. Cal State L.A. had a 3-2 advantage in shots in the two overtime periods.
Beigarten made two of his three saves in the opening half and the other in the second half.
Payne had a strong chance for the Golden Eagles early in the second half after a strong run, but his hard shot through the goalmouth went untouched.
Torres had a good bid in the 82nd minute after accepting a slick pass from Andre Bissmark, but his shot was high.
Payne had another shot from close range in the first overtime period, but his bid curled left of the post.
The Golden Eagles recorded their third straight shutout.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
