Golden Eagles Let One Get Away Against San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team let one get away Saturday night against Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as nine points in the first half and led for most of the second half, but came up emtpy down the stretch in a 63-57 loss to the Coyotes in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State L.A. (13-7, 11-5 CCAA), which had a six-game winning streak snapped on Friday at No. 1 UC San Diego, dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.

Lacy Ramon had 15 points and six rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while Jazzi Johnson also had 15 points.

Angela Streets had a game-high 25 points for Cal State San Bernardino (7-13, 6-10 CCAA), including back-to-back 3-pointers that gave the Coyotes the lead for good in the final three minutes. Eliza Dy added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Cal State L.A. shot 42.3 percent for the game (22-of-52) and made just two of their eight attempts from 3-point range. Cal State San Bernardino shot just 27.1 percent (16-of-59), but knocked down nine 3-pointers in 26 tries. The Coyotes were 22-of-29 from the free-throw line, while the Golden Eagles were 11-of-14. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 43-33 and forced only seven turnovers while committing 11.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the first half after breaking a 17-17 tie with a basket by Ramon, a 3-pointer by Amanda Deal and a free throw by Johnson. The lead grew to 27-20 after a Johnson layup and was extended to 29-20 after a basket by Tessondra Williams with 3:23 left in the half. The Golden Eagles, though, didn't score again in the first half and had to settle for a 29-27 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles opened up a seven-point lead in the second half at 44-37 after a basket by Alyssa Hanson with 11:28 remaining, but the Coyotes scored the next eight points to take a 45-44 lead. A three-point play by Alisha Belt gave the Golden Eagles a 49-48 edge with 4:25 to go and a basket by Ramon gave the Golden Eagles their last lead of the game, 52-51, with 3:26 remaining.

Street's consecutive 3-pointers put the Coyotes ahead, 57-52, and the Golden Eagles couldn't recover. A layup by Wiliams and a free throw by Johnson brought the Golden Eagles to within 57-55 and a basket by Williams made it 59-57, but the Coyotes made four free throws in the waning seconds to close out the game.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Thursday with a road game at Sonoma State.
