Golden Eagles Close Out Regular Season With CCAA Win

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team finished its regular season on a positive note and will now get set to do something the Golden Eagles haven't done since 1998.

The Golden Eagles ended the regular season with a 72-55 victory over San Francisco State Friday night in the Swamp and wound up in a tie for fifth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Although pairings for the CCAA Championship Tournament won't be announced until Saturday, it appears that Cal State L.A. will draw the sixth seed and play at No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday in Pomona. The Golden Eagles and Broncos split regular-season games this season.

Cal State L.A. (16-10, 14-8 CCAA) will play in the eight-team conference tournament for the first time since it was re-started in its current format in 2008. Prior to that, the Golden Eagles were in a four-team conference tournament in 1998.

The Golden Eagles finished in a tie for fifth in the conference with Chico State, just one game behind second-place finishers Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State.

Winners of the first-round tournament games will head to UC San Diego next Friday for the conference semi-finals.

Jazzi Johnson scored 15 points to lead a balanced Cal State L.A. attack. Lacey Gibbons also had a strong performance with 14 points, including a 4-for-6 performance from behind the 3-point arc. Devin Riezebos had nine points and five rebounds.

Michaela Booker had 13 points for San Francisco State (8-20, 7-15 CCAA), while Angela Van Sickel had 11 points and five rebounds.

Cal State L.A. shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59), while limiting San Francisco State to just 27.3 percent shooting (21-of-77). The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 52-43. The Gators had 19 turnovers to 17 for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. scored the first five points of the game on a jumper by Alisha Belt and a 3-pointer by Maryum Jenkins before the Gators countered by scoring the next eight points. San Francisco State held a 13-12 edge before Cal State L.A. scored the next 10 points to take the lead for good. Johnson scored on an offensive rebound to give the Golden Eagles the lead and Ramon followed with a basket. Johnson got a steal and layup, Jenkins scored on a layup and Johnson scored on a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 22-13 lead.

San Francisco State went on a 12-2 run to take its last lead at 25-24. Cal State L.A. broke a 27-27 tie with a 13-2 run to close out the half. A pair of free throws by Ruiz gave the Golden Eagles a 40-27 lead before they settled for a 40-29 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles got a 3-pointer from Gibbons to start the second half and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will continue its season on Tuesday with its first-round game, presumably at Cal Poly Pomona.
