Golden Eagles Survive In A Wild Win Over Humboldt State

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had to win a wild one Friday afternoon against Humboldt State.

The Golden Eagles were unable to hold onto a 3-0 second-half lead and needed an overtime goal from Stephanie Lopez to escape with a 4-3 win over the Jacks. Cal State L.A. (7-4-4) got goals from four different players and needed each goal to subdue Humboldt State (1-10).

The game between California Collegiate Athletic Association foes did not count in the conference standings because Humboldt State cancelled its first three games of the season, including two conference contests. It did count regionally, though, and was an important victory over the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. entered the weekend ranked seventh in the region – and six teams qualify for the NCAA playoffs.

The Golden Eagles had a 20-5 advantage in shots, including a 12-1 edge in the first period. Humboldt State goalkeeper Kelly Lukas made seven saves, while Cal State L.A.'s Gabriella Batmani made three saves. The Golden Eagles also had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. seemed to have things in hand after controlling play in the first half and breaking out to a 2-0 halftime lead. Andrea Lammers collected her first goal of the season with a hard shot that found the far side of the goal. Lopez had the assist and set up Lammers, who was running full-stride when she blasted the shot into the goal.

Natalie Gabriel made it 2-0 when she lofted a ball from a sharp angle that nestled just inside the far post.

The Golden Eagles then made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute when Alexa Zielinski scored her first goal of the season. Joanne Almaguer sent a through pass that found Zielinski right in stride and she was able to shoot into an empty net with the Humboldt State goalkeeper out.

Humboldt State, though, began its come back just four minutes later when Maddi Null scored the first of her two goals. Batmani appeared to slip while attempting to grab the ball and Null quickly tapped the loose ball into the net to make it 3-1.

The Jacks made it 3-2 when a Cal State L.A. defender, under pressure, headed the ball inadvertently into the Golden Eagle goal in the 78th minute.

Null then tied it when her blast from long-range found the net with Batmani out in the 85th minute.

Cal State L.A., though, struck quickly in overtime to win it. After a Humboldt State foul, Raquel Gervas sent a ball into the box that was battled for by several players. Lopez was able to get to it as it squirted free and drilled a shot inside the near post for the game-winner.

Cal State L.A. won for the first time in seven overtime decisions this season. The Golden Eagles were 0-2-4 in their previous six.

Cal State L.A. will conclude its home schedule on Sunday with a home game against the region's top-ranked team, Sonoma State, at 2 p.m. It is also Senior Day and the Golden Eagles will honor their three seniors – Batmani, Gervas and Maddi Meighan – in pregame ceremonies.
