LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw its high-scoring offense ground to a halt Saturday by a tenacious Sonoma State defense.
The Golden Eagles had a three-game winning streak snapped in a 53-49 loss to the Seawolves in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (7-5, 5-3 CCAA) had scored 71 points in each of its last three victories, but couldn't come close to that total Saturday against the Seawolves.
Cal State L.A. shot just 30.8 percent for the game, including a 13.6 percent effort from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles misfired on 19 of their 22 attempts from behind the 3-point arc and never could get untracked.
Sonoma State (5-7, 3-5 CCAA), which was coming off a 43-40 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills, took control of the game in the first half and then weathered a last-ditch effort by the Golden Eagles in the final minute. Cal State L.A. pulled to within two points at 51-49, but a pair of free throws by Aly Henington with 2.3 seconds remaining iced the game for the Seawolves.
Sonoma State shot 39.3 percent for the game and had a 37-36 rebounding edge. The Seawolves also committed 17 turnovers to 21 for the Golden Eagles.
Jazzi Johnson had 11 points and four rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Lacy Ramon had 10 points and five rebounds.
Aly Conway had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Seawolves, while Marie Sweet had nine points and four rebounds and Henington, Jaclyn Bisordi and Elizabeth Day scored eight points each.
Maryum Jenkins had seven points, three rebounds and three assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Lacey Gibbons added six points.
A basket by Jenkins gave the Golden Eagles an early 6-3 lead, but the Seawolves responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. A jumper by
Alyssa Hanson brought the Golden Eagles to within three points at 18-15, but Sonoma State scored the next 11 points to open up a 29-15 advantage with 5:30 left in the half. The Seawolves settled for a 33-22 halftime lead.
A basket by Bronte Sheahan gave the Seawolves their biggest lead of the game at 40-24 with 17:10 remaining and Sonoma State maintained a double-digit advantage until a 3-pointer by
Amanda Deal made it 42-34 with eight minutes to play. A basket by Johnson got the Golden Eagles to within six points at 46-40, but Henington countered with a basket to boost the lead back to eight points for Sonoma State with 2:30 to go.
A 3-pointer by Jenkins made it 48-43 with two minutes to play, but a layup by Elizabeth Day and a free throw by Henington gave the Seawolves a 51-43 edge with 40 seconds to play.
The Golden Eagles made things interesting when a basket by Ramon, a basket by Johnson and a pair of free throws by Ramon after a steal made it a two-point game, 51-49, with four seconds to go, but Henington was fouled and put the game away with two free throws with two seconds left.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at Cal State Stanislaus next Friday.
