Golden Eagles Post Shutout In Season-Opening Victory

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team scored a goal in each half and picked up an NCAA Division II West Region victory over Saint Martin's Thursday night in the Golden Eagles' 2011 season opener.

The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from Lisa Ohberg and a second-half goal from freshman newcomer Norie Pablo to subdue the Saints at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. had a 16-6 edge in shots, but was unable to secure a safe lead during the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Jessie Walworth made four saves to post the shutout for the Golden Eagles, while Gina Cardenas had a solid game for Saint Martin's and made six saves.

Cal State L.A., ranked 23rd in the nation by the NSCAA , also had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard thanks to a beautiful shot by Ohberg. After receiving a pass from Jacqueline Hanna in the box, Ohberg rifled a sharp-angled shot just inside the near post and past Cardenas.

Although Cal State L.A. threatened for the rest of the first half and through most of the second half, the Saints hung tough and trailed only 1-0 before Pablo's late goal finally gave the Golden Eagles some breathing room.

Pablo, one of four newcomers in the starting lineup, pounced on a loose ball and snuck a low shot just inside the far post to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage.

The Golden Eagles, who had a 10-4 edge in shots in the second half, denied the Saints of any real strong scoring chances the remainder of the contest to secure the shutout.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with another non-conference game against an NCAA Division II West Region opponent, Grand Canyon.
