Golden Eagles Put Up A Battle Before Falling To Humboldt

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team put up a major battle against Humboldt State Friday night in the Golden Eagles' season finale.

The Golden Eagles held slim second-half leads, but were unable to hold off the Lumberjacks in a 73-63 loss Friday in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (7-19, 4-18 CCAA) finished the season in a three-way tie for 10th place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Lacy Ramon had 19 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while Erika Ruiz added 18 points and Alisha Belt had six points and 12 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles shot 31 percent from the field (24-of-77), while the Lumberjacks hit 36 percent (19-of-53). Humboldt State, though, knocked down 13 shots in 29 attempts from 3-point range, while Cal State L.A. was just 5-of-18.

Cal State L.A. forced 20 turnovers while committing just 11.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 34-24, late in the first half, but closed the half on a 5-0 run thanks to a basket by Belt and a 3-pointer by Danielle Snyder that made it 34-29 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles then scored the first six points of the second half on a basket by Belt, two free throws by Ramon and a basket by Snyder to take a 35-34 lead with 18:18 to go.

A 3-pointer by Sonia Miller broke a 43-43 tie and back-to-back baskets by Ramon enabled the Golden Eagles to open up a 50-45 lead. Humboldt State scored the next six points before four straight points by Ramon put the Golden Eagles ahead, 54-53, with 8:47 remaining.

A basket by Ruiz gave the Golden Eagles a 56-53 lead with 7:19 remaining, but Humboldt State scored the next 13 points to take over the game. A 3-pointer by Ruiz stopped the run and made it 66-59 with one minute remaining, but that's as close as Cal State L.A. would get.
