SAINT GEORGE, UT -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to holds leads in both halves Friday and wound up paying the price in overtime.
The Golden Eagles endured a nearly eight-minute scoring drought and fell to Academy of Art, 81-73, in overtime in a tournament at Dixie State College. Cal State L.A. (1-2) dropped its second straight game after opening the season with a win over Western Oregon. Academy of Art (2-2) evened its record by snapping a two-game losing streak.
Cal State L.A. shot just 31.9 percent for the game (23-of-72) and made only two of its seven attempts in overtime. Academy of Art shot 39.2 percent for the game (29-of-74), knocked down three of its seven field-goal attempts in overtime and then made five-of-six free throws in the extra period to put the game away.
Lacy Ramon had 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Tessondra Williams and
Jazzi Johnson scored 11 points each. Devin London had a game-high 29 points for Academy of Art, while Alisa Griggs and Lorraine Etchell had 12 points and Nicol Biesek had 11 points.
Samantha Hansen had eight points and five rebounds and
Alyssa Hanson had six points and four rebounds.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 51-48 and committed 23 turnovers to 21 for Academy of Art.
Cal State L.A. led for most of the first half and eventually opened up a 29-20 lead after a pair of free throws by Hansen with 6:09 remaining in the period. Academy of Art, though, closed the half with a 19-7 run to take a 39-36 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 10-0 run to erase the halftime deficit. Johnson converted a layup to start the run and a basket by Hanson gave the Golden Eagles a 40-39 lead. The run continued with four straight points from Ramon and concluded with a basket by Williams to make it 46-39.
The Golden Eagles built their first 10-point lead, 53-43, after a layup by Hanson and held a 55-45 lead after a pair of free throws by Hanson.
Cal State L.A. still had a 69-60 lead after a 3-pointer by Williams with 4:12 remaining, but were blanked the rest of regulation while Academy of Art steadily chipped away at the lead.
Academy of Art then continued its surge in overtime, scoring the first five points of the extra period to make their game-deciding run, 14-0. Ramon scored on an offensive rebound to finally stop the run and make it 74-71 and a Ramon basket made it 77-73, but that was as close the Golden Eagles would get as Academy of Art hit its late free throws to protect its lead.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a game at tourney host Dixie State College.
