LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had to battle, but the Golden Eagles were able to clinch a spot in the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament for a third straight season.
The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from
Gabbi Segall and made it stand up in a 1-0 win at Cal State Monterey Bay Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (11-3-3, 9-3-3 CCAA) wraps up second place in the CCAA South Division.
The Golden Eagles recorded their ninth shutout of the season and they needed it because the offense was unable to generate many attacks against the defensive-minded Otters (3-13, 2-13 CCAA).
Segall, who has scored all three of her goals this season in the last five games, got the only goal of the contest in the 37
th minute off an assist from
Marissa Pickett. Cal State L.A. had only seven shots in the contest with six of them on frame. Cal State Monterey Bay actually had a 9-7 advantage in shots, but only four of those were on goal.
Jessie Walworth made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Kendra Gillio made six saves for the Otters.
There were only two corner kicks in the game, one for each side, and both came in the first half.
Segall had three of the Golden Eagles' seven shots in the contest.
Maddi Meighan had two shots and
Norie Pablo and
Cari Gill had one each.
Cal State L.A., which is ranked 19
th in the nation by the NSCAA and second in the West Region in the official NCAA West Region poll, has the second-highest point total in the conference heading into the final game of the regular season on Sunday. The Golden Eagles, who won the 2009 CCAA Championship, had the highest point-total in the conference in each of the past two years.
Cal State L.A., which had never made it into the CCAA Championship Tournament prior to 2007, has now made it in four of the past five seasons. The Golden Eagles reached the tournament championship game in 2007, 2009 and 2010 and won their first-ever conference title in 2009.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the regular season with a game at Cal State East Bay on Sunday. CCAA Tournament pairings will be announced later Sunday.
