Segall Is Golden As Golden Eagles Beat Tritons In Overtime

Box Score

LA JOLLA – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saved its best for last Friday night in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match at UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles got a game-winning goal in overtime from Gabbi Segall and beat the Tritons, 1-0, Friday at Triton Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (9-2-2, 7-2-2 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten streak to nine games and handed UC San Diego (8-1-4, 7-1-3 CCAA) its first loss of the season.

Cal State L.A., which has won two consecutive CCAA South Division titles and finished with the conference's best record both times, pulled to within one point of the Tritons for the South Division lead. UC San Diego has a conference-best 24 points, while the Golden Eagles now have 23.

The game featured two teams ranked in the national top-20 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Cal State L.A. came into the game ranked 20th, while UC San Diego was ranked sixth.

The game certainly didn't disappoint. UC San Diego had a 14-8 edge in shots, but Cal State L.A. got the only shot in the extra period and Segall made it count. The play started when UC San Diego was unable to clear a cross from Cari Gill and Segall knocked it home past UC San Diego goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong.

The goal was Segall's first of the season, while Gill picked up her second assist.

It was only the fourth goal allowed all season by the Tritons, who came in outscoring their opponents, 25-3.

Cal State L.A.'s defense has been almost as stingy. The Golden Eagles have allowed only five goals all season, including one to UC San Diego on Sept. 9 in Los Angeles that resulted in a 1-0 loss.

Cal State L.A. has now beaten UC San Diego three consecutive times in La Jolla. UC San Diego, meanwhile, has beaten Cal State L.A. two straight times in Los Angeles.

The Golden Eagles, after starting out the conference schedule with a pair of 1-0 defeats, are now 7-0-2 in their last nine games and have given up just three goals in that span.

Jessie Walworth made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles and Cal State L.A. recorded its eight shutout of the season. Armstrong also made four saves for the Tritons.

UC San Diego had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, getting four in each half.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
