Golden Eagles Come Up Short Against San Francisco State

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team endured a rough second half Saturday night and dropped its second California Collegiate Athletic Association game in a row.
 
The Golden Eagles shot just 25 percent in the second half and fell to San Francisco State, 59-50, Saturday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (3-9, 1-6 CCAA) was swept in its two games at home this weekend and fell to 3-3 in the Eagles Nest this season.
 
Jazzi Johnson had a productive game for Cal State L.A., pouring in 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Johnson was 6-of-10 from the floor, but the rest of the team combined to make only nine shots in 39 attempts.
 
Andrea Ohlssen led San Francisco State (6-9, 2-5 CCAA), which earned a weekend split with the victory. ZaLisha Oliver added 12 points and two rebounds and Donisha Tate had 11 points and six rebounds. All three leading scorers for the Gators came off the bench.
 
Jordan Kuzma also had a double-double for Cal State L.A. with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Jameiz Terrell finished with eight points.
 
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 48-34 rebounding edge, but couldn't overcome 30.6 percent shooting and 30 turnovers. San Francisco State came into the game as one of the top defensive teams in the country in shooting percentage allowed.
 
San Francisco State shot 42.1 percent, but also made only 9-of-21 free-throw attempts. Cal State L.A. was a more efficient 18-of-27 from the line.
 
The game was extremely tight in the first half and Cal State L.A. opened up a 20-14 lead with 7:15 remaining in the period after a pair of free throws by Terrell. San Francisco State, though, got a go-ahead 3-pointer by Ohlssen to break a 25-25 tie before a basket by Kuzma cut the Gators' lead to 28-27 at halftime.
 
San Francisco State dug in defensively in the second half and took control of the game. After a 3-pointer by Terrell gave the Golden Eagles their last lead of the night at 30-28 with 19 minutes to play, San Francisco State went on a 15-2 run over the next nine minutes to take a 45-32 lead.

The Gators took their biggest lead of the game, 59-42, with 2:10 to go after a basket by Oliver. The Golden Eagles scored the final eight points of the game, four by Johnson and four by Kuzma to cut the final margin to eight points.
 
Cal State L.A. will now play its next four games on the road, beginning with a contest next Friday night at Cal State San Bernardino.
