Golden Eagles Struggle In Conference Loss To Otters

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to build upon its first California Collegiate Athletic Association win of the season.
 
The Golden Eagles struggled all night on offense and fell to Cal State Monterey Bay, 62-42, Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (3-8, 1-5 CCAA) made only seven baskets in the second half and saw Cal State Monterey Bay (8-2, 4-2 CCAA) ultimately pull away in what was a competitive contest for most of the night.
 
Jazzi Johnson had 11 points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Jordan Kuzma had eight points and four rebounds.
 
Veronica Williams had 20 points to lead the Otters, while Helen Suarez and Holly Holcomb had 11 points each.
 
Cal State L.A. shot 41.5 percent for the game, but made only two of eight attempts from 3-point range and 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles limited the Otters to just 35.7 percent shooting, but Cal State Monterey Bay knocked down eight 3-pointers and was 14-of-18 from the line.
 
Cal State Monterey Bay had a decided edge on the boards, enjoying a 38-27 rebounding edge. Cal State L.A. also hurt itself with 25 turnovers, while the Otters committed only 18.
 
Cal State L.A. was hitting its shots early and opened up a 13-8 lead less than four minutes into the game after a 3-pointer by Jameiz Terrell and a jumper by Brionna Baker accounted for a 5-0 run.
 
After a free throw by Johnson put the Golden Eagles ahead, 14-11, with 11:58 to go in the half, Cal State Monterey Bay went on a 17-4 run over the next eight minutes to open up a 28-18 lead. The Otters opened up a 12-point lead before a 3-pointer by Kelli McClintick cut the deficit to 33-24 at halftime.
 
Cal State L.A. opened the second half with a driving layup by Stacie Whitley to slice the lead to 33-26, but Cal State Monterey Bay scored the next seven points to grab a 14-point lead with 13 minutes remaining. The Otters led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game against San Francisco State on Saturday in the Eagles Nest.
