Golden Eagles Open CCAA Play With Another Shutout Win

CARSON – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team continued its blazing start to the 2009 season, this time away from home.
 
The Golden Eagles, playing its first match away from Jesse Owens Track, got a pair of first-half goals from #Liz Franco and Alex Conley# and went on to a 3-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Toro Field. Cal State L.A. (4-0, 1-0 CCAA) recorded its fourth straight shutout and has now outscored its first four opponents, 19-0.
 
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 20-4 advantage in shots against Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3, 0-1 CCAA). The Toros didn't get their first shot until the waning moments of the first half. The Golden Eagles had a 12-1 edge in shots in the first half.
 
Jessie Walworth made two saves for the Golden Eagles. She stopped a try from the Toros' Natalie Moreno in the final minute of the first half and she also stopped a shot by Lexi Ford with less than four minutes left in the game.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills goalie Alyssa Congdon made five saves for the Toros.
 
Franco, who set the program's career assist record last Saturday in a 9-0 win over Academy of Art, didn't add to her total on Tuesday, but she did notch her third goal of the season in the 21st minute with assists from Conley and Gabbi Segall. She was a consistent threat Tuesday and had a match-high seven shots.
 
Segall, the CCAA Player of the Week who scored three goals with one assist on Saturday, picked up two assists on Wednesday. She set up Conley for her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 28th minute.
 
Cal State L.A. narrowly missed another goal when a shot by Jasmin Stuemper hit the post.
 
The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on in the second half and made it 3-0 in the 67th minute. Natalie Martin scored her first goal of the season when she headed in a free kick from Kastidi Robles. The assist was the first of the year for Robles.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday when the Golden Eagles host Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
