CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got its 2009-10 season off to a tough start.
The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the game and stayed close through the midway point of the second half before falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 87-60, Wednesday night in the Torodome. The game was the season and California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams.
Cal State L.A. started well and
Jameiz Terrell hit a pair a 3-pointers to stake the Golden Eagles to a 6-0 lead. The Golden Eagles, though, then surrendered the next 16 points and Cal State Dominguez Hills led the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles were able to slice a 17-point halftime deficit to just five points with 13 minutes left and Cal State L.A. still trailed by only six points with 12:30 to go, but Cal State Dominguez Hills put the game out of reach with a 21-2 run that gave the Toros a 78-53 advantage.
Cal State L.A. managed only nine points over the final 12 minutes of the game.
Terrell had a career night for the Golden Eagles, pouring in 17 points to go along with four assists and three steals. She knocked down five of her six 3-point attempts.
Jazzi Johnson added 10 points and four rebounds, while
Jordan Kuzma had nine points and nine rebounds.
Kayla Montalvo led all scorers with 21 points for Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Aundria Anderson had 17 points on 7-of-7 shooting and MacKenzie Mathias had 16 points.
Cal State L.A. shot 38.5 percent for the game, including 50 percent in the second half. Cal State Dominguez Hills, though, shot 49 percent for the game, including 63 percent from behind the 3-point arc. The Toros knocked down 12 of their 19 attempts from behind the arc.
Cal State L.A. was outrebounded, 32-28, and committed 20 turnovers to 14 for the Toros.
Terrell hit two 3-pointers to get the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead, but Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 16-0 run to open up a 16-6 lead. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half and were down by 17, 45-28, at the break.
Cal State L.A. chipped away at the deficit in the second half and went on a 10-0 run to pull to within five points, 49-44, with 15:30 to go.
Kelli McClintick hit a 3-pointer to start the rally, Kuzma hit a basket, Terrell hit a lay-up and
Stacie Whitley scored on a three-point play to account for the run.
Terrell hit another 3-pointer to pull the Golden Eagles to within five points again, 54-49, and a basket by McClintick kept the margin at six points, 57-51, before the Toros went on their game-breaking 21-2 run.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a non-conference game at San Diego Christian on Saturday.
