LA JOLLA -- It took awhile, but the extra work was well worth it for Cal State L.A. men's soccer team.
Morten Marthinsen scored on a breakaway in the second overtime to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 victory over UC San Diego Sunday at Triton Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (7-2-2, 5-1 CCAA) moved into a tie for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division with the victory. The win was the fifth straight in conference play for the Golden Eagles. UC San Diego (1-6-1, 1-4-1 CCAA) had sent the game into overtime with a goal in the 70th minute.
Cal State L.A. had an 18-13 advantage in shots, but UC San Diego held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. None of those corner kicks, though, resulted in a goal. Cal State L.A. had all three shots in the second overtime period.
After a scoreless first half, Patrick Thurston gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when he converted a penalty kick that was awarded after UC San Diego goalie Peter Akman took down a Golden Eagle attacker. It was Thurston's second goal of the season.
The Tritons got the equalizer when Jason Le scored his third goal of the season off passes from Tony Choi and Tom Caplan.
The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the second overtime when Marthinsen, a senior All-American, picked up his eighth goal of the season. Spencer Tripp started the game-winning play by sending a ball down the left sideline. Marthinsen beat the Triton defense, drew the goalkeeper out and beat him on the left side for the game-winner at the 104:20 mark.
Tobias Hummel made two saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Akman made five saves for the Tritons. Marthinsen was a factor all afternoon long, firing off a match-high seven shots.
