Golden Eagles Knock Off No. 13 Cal State Dominguez Hills

CARSON – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team capitalized on two second-half chances and earned a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory.

The Golden Eagles got second-half goals from Morten Marthinsen and Kyle Hewitt and knocked off No. 13 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, Friday at Toro Stadium. Cal State L.A. (6-2-2, 4-1 CCAA) won its fourth straight conference match and pulled to within three points of first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-2, 5-1 CCAA) in the CCAA South Division.

Hewitt's game-winning goal came with just 2:59 remaining in regulation and was his third of the season. He received a cross from Marthinsen, who had stolen the ball from a Cal State Dominguez Hills defender. Hewitt directed the pass into the upper right corner of the net and past Toro goalkeeper Derby Carrillo.

After a scoreless first half, Marthinsen got the Golden Eagles on the board just 22 seconds into the second half. He got in front of a Cal State Dominguez Hills clearing attempt outside of the Toros' box and beat Carrillo 1v1 for his seventh goal of the season.

The Toros got the equalizer in the 52nd minute when an attempted clear by Cal State L.A. goalie Tobias Hummel was blocked by Cal State Dominguez Hills' Diego Turoldo. Rivas then collected the ball, dribbled in and beat Hummel near-side for the tying goal. It was Rivas' fifth goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles gained a man advantage in the 66th minute when a Toro player was issued his second yellow card of the game and was ejected. The Golden Eagles got their chance late in the game and made it count.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 15-14 edge in shots and a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles had a 10-6 edge in shots on goal and Carrillo made eight saves for the Toros, who had a seven-match winning streak snapped.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a match at UC San Diego.
