LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team suffered its second straight tough decision at home.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the 71st minute and UC San Diego made it stand up for a 1-0 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Friday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (9-4-2, 7-2 CCAA) remains tied for first in the CCAA South Division, while UC San Diego (3-9-2, 2-6-2) climbs into fourth.
The game's only goal came midway through the second half. After a UC San Diego shot, Jonathan Sawyer was able to roll the ball back toward the top of the box, where an onrushing David Bakal drilled a shot into the left corner of the net.
Cal State L.A. held a 12-6 advantage in shots, taking six in each half. UC San Diego goalie Peter Akman made five saves, while Cal State L.A. goalie
Tobias Hummel made two saves.
UC San Diego had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles had a couple good chances in the opening minutes of the game. A lofted shot by
John Massaquoi was just tipped over the crossbar by Akman just 3:30 into the contest. A minute later,
Patrick Thurston's header was saved by Akman and another shot by Massaquoi in the 24
th minute that was headed toward the upper right corner of the net was saved by Akman.
UC San Diego got the first good chance in the second half, but Tony Choi's attempt was saved by Hummel in the 57th minute.
After Bakal's goal, the Tritons got another chance just five minutes later when Choi intercepted the ball and, racing down the left side of the box, got off a hard shot that was saved by Hummel.
The Golden Eagles put heavy pressure on the Tritons in the waning minutes of the game and
Kyle Hewitt got off a hard shot, but Akman was able to bat it up in the air and the Triton defense cleared it before the Golden Eagles could get to the rebound.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against South Division co-leader Cal State Dominguez Hills.
