Vincent Camper and
Jontae Vinson led the Golden Eagles with 21 points apiece, but Cal State L.A. fell to the Broncos in Kellogg Gym on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, 77-75. The Golden Eagles fall to 6-10 overall, 3-9 in the CCAA Conference.
The contest was close throughout, as evident by four tied scores in the first half. Vinson briefly put the Golden Eagles ahead with just under a minute to play as he took advantage of a shot from the line. With just a second to play in the half, Cal Poly Pomona's Donnelle Booker nailed a layup to give the Broncos the 41-40 edge heading into the break.
Junior Rodriguez put the Golden Eagles ahead once again with a jumper to start the second half.
Cal State L.A. would find eventually find themselves with a five-point lead before the Broncos could catch up. The contest would be deadlocked for the ninth and final time with 7:42 left to play at 59-59. Moments later, Camper went to the line and converted his free throw attempt to give the Golden Eagles their final lead of the night. Over the final few minutes, the Broncos would hold a lead of as many as eight points over Cal State L.A. Down by five, Robert Reynaga hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it would be too little too late as the Golden Eagles went on to drop the contest, 77-75. The Golden Eagles return to the Eagles Nest on Friday, February 2, as they host San Francisco State in a doubleheader featuring both the women and men's teams. The women start at 5:30 p.m. and the men are set to tip off at 7:30. Cal State L.A. students, faculty and staff, and Alumni Association memebers are admitted free to all Golden Eagles regular season home contests with their vailid ID.
