Complete Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Alexandra Meuter hit .635 and Luana Cavalcanti had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs as the Golden Eagles sweep Sonoma State on Thursday, September 7, in Rohnert Park. This was the sixth sweep of the season for Cal State L.A., who improve to 6-2, 2-1 CCAA. Sonoma State falls to 4-3, 1-2 CCAA.

Four Golden Eagles hit over .400, including Isabella Camargo, who made her Golden Eagle debut after sitting out the 2005 season with an injury. Cal State L.A. hit .328 as a team, with a match high percentage of .394 in game two. Defensively, Ashley Hardwick paced the team with 12 digs. Airess Padda, who hit .538 for the match, also contributed with four blocks.

After trailing 0-2 early in game one, Alexandra Meuter tallied her first of four kills in the game to start the Golden Eagles' scoring. After a Sonoma State error, of which they committed 11, put Cal State L.A. up 4-3, the Golden Eagles never looked back. The Seawolves were able to stay in the game until the 10-16 mark, as the Golden Eagles went on to win nine of the next 13 points, putting them ahead, 25-14. The Sonoma State offense would muster just two more points as, with Luana Cavalcanti serving, Ashley Hardwick, Tanya White, and Kha Tara Steen scored successive kills to end the game, 30-16.

In game two, the Golden Eagles picked up right where they left off in game one, by taking an early 3-0 lead and never looking back. Isabella Camargo made the most of her Golden Eagle debut and scored a service ace on her first attempt. After leading by as many as six points, the Golden Eagles found themselves with “only” a three point lead at the 16-13 mark. After calling a timeout, Cal State L.A. would go on to win five of the next six points to pad their lead, 21-15. A late six-point run would eventually put the Golden Eagles up 28-19. Luana Cavalcanti found herself serving with game point on the line as she shut down the Seawolves with a game-winning service ace. Cal State L.A. took game two, 30-21.

For the first time in the match, the Golden Eagles found themselves in trouble in game three. Both teams traded points early on before the Seawolves were able to manage to pull ahead 6-5. Cal State L.A. would trail, 10-16, before tying the game up after a game-tying six-point run. The game would go back-and-forth until the Golden Eagles took a 21-20 lead as Keslie Brown assisted on Isabella Camargo's kill. The Seawolves would climb back into the game, and the score would go on to be tied three more times. After trailing 26-27, the Golden Eagles would go on to win the next four points and the game, taking advantage of two Cavalcanti kills in that span. The Golden Eagles completed their sixth sweep of the season, 30-27.

The Golden Eagles' road trip continues on Saturday night as they travel to Arcata, California, to take on new CCAA member Humboldt State at 7 pm. The team returns to campus one week from tomorrow as the Golden Eagle Alumni Game is set for Friday, September 15. The next night, Saturday, September 16, the CSU Monterey Bay Otters visit the Eagles Nest, with the start time for both matches set for 7 pm.
