LOS ANGELES – Luana Cavalcanti recorded 17 kills and an attacking percentage of .394 as the Golden Eagles swept Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday night. Tanya White also had a big night with 13 kills and a .306 percentage. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 11-3 overall, and 7-2 in the CCAA, as the Broncos fall to 5-9, 2-7.
The Golden Eagles started the first game of the match with a 5-0 run, and winning eight of the first 10 points. Cal State L.A. controlled the game, out hitting the Broncos, .238 to .026. The Golden Eagles took advantage of nine Bronco errors and eventually won the game on a Tanya White kill, 30-21.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two but Cal Poly Pomona was able to come back to tie the game up at 12-12. The game would remain close and the score would be tied up four more times, most recently at 27-27, before the Golden Eagles went on to win on a Bronco service error, 30-28.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the third game, trailing 4-2 at one point. Cal State L.A. climbed back into the lead at the 11-10 mark and never looked back. With the Golden Eagles leading 26-16, the Broncos went on a five-point run to bring them to within six points of the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. fought off the attempted Bronco-comeback and won three of the last four points to complete the three game sweep, 30-21.
The Golden Eagles are back on the road until they return home on Friday, October 13, for a match against new CCAA member Humboldt State. Before that, the Golden Eagles have three more games left on their road trip as they take on Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, September 29, Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, October 6, and UC San Diego on October 7. All of those matches are set for 7 pm starts.
