#6 Volleyball is Swept by #19 UC San Diego

LOS ANGELES – Sixth-ranked Cal State L.A. hit just .163 against #19 UC San Diego as the Golden Eagles dropped their 2006 home opener 27-30, 22-30, 26-30 on Friday, September 1, 2006.

Friday night's loss, along with last Saturday's loss to Seattle, marks the first time the team lost consecutive matches since October 2004. Cal State L.A. falls to 4-2, 0-1 in the CCAA, as UC San Diego stays undefeated at 6-0, 1-0 in the CCAA

Game one saw both teams trading points throughout as the score was tied13 times. After taking a 23-22 advantage over the Golden Eagles, the Tritons were able to hang on to win the game 30-27. The game ended with UC San Diego's Kristin Halvorsen setting up Rebecca Bailey for the final kill of the match.

The Golden Eagles featured impressive offensive performances by Airess Padda, Alexandria Meuter, and Tanya White, but Cal State L.A. fell to the Tritons in game two. Padda hit .667 for the game while Meuter hit .429 and recorded 10 assists. White hit .400 and posted 5 kills for the game; but the Golden Eagles hit only .160 as a team, to the Tritons' .320. UC San Diego's late six-point run put the game out of reach for Cal State L.A. The Tritons continued to roll through the competition with a 30-22 victory.

UC San Diego's chances for a sweep seemed to be in jeopardy late into game three. Much like the first game, the teams traded the lead several times. At one point, the Golden Eagles led 27-24 before the game found itself tied up at 28-28. The Tritons won the final point as Kristin Halvorsen and Brianna Koche blocked Luana Cavalcanti's attack. UC San Diego went on to complete their sixth consecutive sweep by a score of 30-28.

The Golden Eagles look to get back on the winning track tomorrow night as they tangle with the cross-town rival Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in a 7 pm match in the Eagles Nest.
