vs. Western Oregon
LOS ANGELES – The Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles completed their third consecutive sweep of the UCSD Invitational, and the 2006 season, as they wore out the Western Oregon Wolves in La Jolla.
In a later match, CSULA took the measure of Western Washington by a 3-0 count. Cal State L.A. is now 4-0.
Early in the first game, freshman Makinna Hibbard broke a 4-4 tie, and the Golden Eagles took nine of the next eleven points and never looked back. Senior Luana Cavalcanti scored the kill to end the game, 30-18.
In game two, Western Oregon (0-3) committed 16 errors on which the Golden Eagles eagerly capitalized. Cal State L.A. had a hitting percentage of only .167 as a team, but managed to cruise to a 30-19 win.
After taking a 2-1 lead in game three, the Golden Eagles found themselves in trouble for the first time this season. Breaking a 2-2 tie, Western Oregon took the lead and held until the Golden Eagles fought back and tied the game up at 27-27. At one point, Western Oregon led by as many as eight points, holding the 25-17 advantage over the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. would go on to win 13 of the final 15 points of the game, taking advantage of six Western Oregon errors in that span. Senior Shannon Johnson tallied four kills, including the game winner, as Cal State L.A. fought back to sweep the Wolves 30-27.
The UCSD Invitational continues as the Golden Eagles are set to see action against Western Washington on Friday afternoon at 4 pm before facing Seattle on Saturday morning at 11 am.
The Golden Eagles make their 2006 home debut next weekend as they host UC San Diego in the Eagles Nest on Friday, September 1, and cross-town rival Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, September 2. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
