SAN BERNARDINO -- Junior midfielder Amber de Seriere converted a penalty kick with 11 minutes remaining in the match Friday to give Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in a CCAA conference match at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory improved the Golden Eagles to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in the CCAA while the Coyotes are now 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
The Golden Eagles dodged a bullet with three seconds left in regulation when Cal State San Bernardino's Mariam Ghaderi, a freshman from Upland, missed a penalty kick. Her try was handled by veteran CSULA keeper Reyna Coca, one of her nine saves in the match.
The Coyotes struck first when freshman Ashley Salas headed in a corner kick from Casey Clark just three minutes before halftime. Twenty-six seconds later, Cal State LA retaliated with a 25-yard blast into the upper net off the foot of Gabby Lovato from a feed by Lani Laurilia.
The 1-1 deadlock was broken by de Seriere's penalty kick with 11:50 remaining in the match.
Cal State San Bernardino will host Cal State Bakersfield at 12:30 p.m. Sunday while the Golden Eagles travel to Cal Poly Pomona.
