Golden Eagle Mens Soccer Team Falls to Humboldt State, 2-1 in CCAA Opener

LOS ANGELES – Jilmer Moralez scored in the closing minutes of the match, but Cal State L.A. was unable to come from behind as Humboldt State defeated the Golden Eagles 2-1 in Arcata on Friday evening. The match was the first CCAA Conference game for both teams, as the Golden Eagles fall to 1-2-1 overall, and 0-1-0 CCAA. The Lumberjacks improve to 3-0-0, 1-0-0.

Scoring in this match started early. Just under ten minutes into the game, Humboldt State snuck the ball past Golden Eagle goalie Patrick Fry. About nine minutes later, the Lumberjacks would increase their lead over Cal Sate L.A., 2-0. The Golden Eagles put up an aggressive fight in attempt to get back into the game, committing 12 fouls in the first half alone.

The Golden Eagles dominated play in the second half, taking 11 shots, to the Lumberjacks three. The half was marked by physical play from both sides as a total of four yellow cards, two to each team, were doled out, with 23 fouls committed -- 13 by Cal State L.A., 10 by Humboldt State.

Of the 11 Golden Eagle shots, only five were on goal with one going in with just under three minutes to go. Jilmer Moralez found a loose ball on the left side and knocked it in to bring the Golden Eagles to within one.

Time would expire before Cal State L.A. could force a draw, with the game ending in favor of Humboldt State, 2-1.

The Golden Eagles' four game road trip comes to a close on Sunday, as Cal State L.A. heads back to Rohnert Park to take on Sonoma State in a 2 pm match.

The Golden Eagles return home to Jesse Owens Track for a Wednesday, September 13, match against Cal State Bakersfield. The men's game is set for 4:30 pm and will take place as the first match of a doubleheader with the women's team scheduled to play at 7 pm.
