LOS ANGELES – Dennis Idrissa scored the game's first goal, and assisted on each of the Golden Eagles' others, as Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team defeated San Francisco State on Friday, September 29, 3-2. The win was Cal State L.A.'s fourth consecutive, and they now stand at 6-4-1 overall, 5-3 in the CCAA. The Gators fall to 4-6-2, 2-5-2.
The Golden Eagles outplayed their opponents throughout the half. Cal State L.A. outshot San Francisco State, 12-5, and opened the scoring at the 26:09 mark when Dennis Idrissa put a Morten Marthinsen pass past the Gators' goalkeeper to score his fifth goal of the season. Nearly fifteen minutes later, Beville Constantine came off the bench to put the Golden Eagles up, 2-0. Idrissa assisted on Constantine's goal. Soon after the second Cal State L.A. goal, the Gators would score, as the Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Cal State L.A. took nine shots, all of them on goal. The Gators were able to take eight of their own, with one going past Golden Eagle goalkeeper Noe David at 58:31. With the game tied at 2-2, Idrissa and Jason Swope got the ball to Derrek Horn, who shot the game winner into the back of the San Francisco State net to give Cal State L.A. the lead, and ultimately the win, 3-2.
With their win, the Golden Eagles won their fourth consecutive game since a seven-game winning streak in 1994. Prior to that, also in 1994, Cal State L.A. had a nine-game unbeaten streak, going 8-0-1 in that span.
Following this afternoon's win, the Golden Eagles remain on the road as they head off for a 3 p.m. match against CSU Monterey Bay on Sunday, October 1. Their trip concludes on Wednesday, October 4, with a 4:30 p.m. match at Cal State Bakersfield.
Next Friday, October 6, the Golden Eagles return to Jesse Owens Track for a doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus. The men's game starts at 4:30 p.m., with the women set for a 7 p.m. start.
