Marthinsen Scores Twice, Golden Eagles Win Third Straight in CCAA Men's Soccer Action

LOS ANGELES – Morten Marthinson scored two goals as the Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to three games with a 2-0 men's soccer victory over UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Track. With that win, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-4-1 overall, and 4-3 in the CCAA. UC San Diego falls to 6-3-1, 3-2-1.

Cal State L.A. opened the scoring early, as with just over nine minutes expired in the game, Morten Marthinsen took Dennis Idrissa's pass and sent it past the Tritons' goalkeeper. Rufino Franco picked up the second assist. The Golden Eagles held the Tritons to just four shots in the half, with two of them being on goal. Cal State L.A. took the 1-0 lead into the half.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles took control and recorded eight shots, three of which were on goal. With just over three minutes left in the game, Marthinsen scored an insurance goal to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 2-0. Marvin Sandoval and Dennis Idrissa picked up assists on the second goal.

That win gave the Golden Eagles their third consecutive, and fourth of the past five games. This is the first time Cal State L.A.'s men's team has had such a winning streak since winning four consecutive in September, 2001.

The Golden Eagles return to action next weekend as, on Friday, September 29, they head up the coast to take on San Francisco State at 12:30 pm. On Sunday, October 1, the team heads into action against CSU Monterey Bay in a 3 pm match.
