LOS ANGELES – Dennis Idrissa scored the game-winning goal, as the Golden Eagles defeated #8 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday night at Jesse Owens Track, 3-2. This was the first time since September 30, 1995, that Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team defeated the Toros, ending a streak spanning 23 games, in which the Golden Eagles failed to win, going 0-22-1.
The Golden Eagles improve to 4-4-1 overall, and 3-3 in the CCAA. The Toros fall to 7-3, 3-3.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took an early lead, scoring the game's first goal at the 13:04 mark. Cal State L.A. tied the game up just about 90 seconds later as Idrissa and Marvin Sandoval assisted on Morten Marthinsen's goal. The Golden Eagles would take their first lead of the afternoon as Jason Swope took Derrek Horn's pass and shot it past the Toro goalkeeper. Before the half was over, Cal State Dominguez Hills would tie the game up, 2-2.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles were outshot, 5-7, with only two of their shots being on goal, but Cal State L.A. made their second one count. Just as it looked as if the teams would be headed to overtime, Idrissa was awarded a penalty kick, which he made the most of by launching the ball past Toro goalkeeper Derby Carrillo. Behind goalkeeper Patrick Fry, who made six saves in the game, the Golden Eagles were able to hold on to the lead, and for the first time in nearly 11 years, beat the nationally-ranked Toros, 3-2.
The Golden Eagles will be at home again this Sunday, September 24, to take on CCAA South Division-leading UC San Diego in a 12:30 pm match. The women's team will follow at 3 pm. All Cal State L.A. students are admitted free with their valid campus I.D.
