SAN BERNARDINO -- A goal by senior midfielder Oscar Garcia and a tenacious defense by Cal State San Bernardino enabled the Coyotes to pull out a 1-0 CCAA conference men's soccer win over Cal State L.A. Friday at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory was the first in the CCAA for the Coyotes, now 2-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference. Cal State L.A. slipped to 2-4-1 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA.
Garcia converted a perfect crossing pass from sophomore Daniel Rodriguez in the 20th minute and junior Lucas Pepi made five saves of Golden Eagles shot including stopping a header by Cal State L.A.'s Morton Marthinsen with eight seconds left.
Cal State San Bernardino's defense limited the Golden Eagles to nine shots in the match, just three in the second half. The Coyotes had 13 tries on goal but CSULA goalkeeper Patrick Fry turned away five of the ones that were nearest the goal mouth.
The Coyotes will face Cal State Bakersfield at 3 p.m. Sunday at home while Cal State L.A. will play at Cal Poly Pomona.
