Golden Eagles Men Get Back on Winning Track, Defeat Chico State, 2-1

LOS ANGELES – Marvin Sandoval and Morten Marthinsen both scored goals as the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles defeated Chico State at Jesse Owens Track on Sunday afternoon, 2-1. The win snapped the Golden Eagles' two-game losing streak and improved their overall record to 8-6-1, and the CCAA record to 7-5. The loss dropped Chico State to 7-8 overall, 6-6 in the CCAA.

Cal State L.A. took the lead at the 27:58 mark as Marvin Sandoval, assisted by Dennis Idrissa, scored his third goal of the season, firing the shot past Chico State goalkeeper Dan Dickson. The Golden Eagles outshot the Wildcats 13-9 in the half, while goalkeeper Patrick Fry stopped all three Chico State shots on goal.

The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats when Morten Marthinsen scored at 79:05. The goal was Marthinsen's seventh of the season, tying him for the team lead with Idrissa. With just over six minutes to go, Chico State's A.J. Carboneau brought his team to within one, putting an unassisted shot past the Golden Eagles' Fry. Cal State L.A. won the game, 2-1.

Up next for the Golden Eagles is a two game road trip next weekend. Their first game is on Friday, October 13, against UC San Diego in La Jolla at 4:30 p.m. Their final regular season road game will be on Sunday, October 15, as Cal State L.A. heads to Carson to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 12:30 p.m.

The Golden Eagles return home for their final homestand of 2006 on Friday, October 20, as Cal Poly Pomona comes to town for a 4:30 p.m. match. The regular season concludes on Sunday, October 20, when Cal State San Bernardino heads into Jesse Owens Track for a 12:30 p.m. showdown.
