LOS ANGELES – The Cal State L.A. men's soccer team was defeated by Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night at Jesse Owens Track. Despite outshooting their opponents, 14-7, the men fell to the Warriors, 3-2, in overtime. They now stand at 7-6-1 overall, and 6-5 in the CCAA.
Late in the first half of their match, the men found themselves down, 1-0. With 5:40 left in the half, Derrek Horn scored his sixth goal of the season, and his fourth in three games, as he fired a pass from Gibby Beanland and Jason Swope past the Warriors' goalkeeper. The teams headed into halftime tied, 1-1.
With just under 19 minutes left in the second half, Cal State L.A. broke the tie when Dennis Idrissa scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Horn and Morten Marthisen picked up assists on the play. The game would be tied up again when, with 5:53 left in regulation, Cal State Stanislaus' Kyle Lindquist scored his second goal of the match.
Tied at 1-1, and for the third time this season, the Golden Eagles headed into overtime. With just over a minute left in the first overtime period, the Warriors' Frank Coehlo was able to get the ball past Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Patrick Fry to hand Cal State L.A. their first overtime loss of the season.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they take on Chico State at Jesse Owens Track at 12:30 p.m.
