Cal State L.A. Mens Soccer Defeats Cal State San Bernardino, 2-1, Clinches CCAA South Division Championship

LOS ANGELES – Kyle Hewitt and Jason Swope each scored goals as the Golden Eagles defeated Cal State San Bernardino at Jesse Owens Track on Sunday afternoon, 2-1. With that win, Cal State L.A. clinched the CCAA South Division title and a berth in this coming weekend's CCAA Championship Tournament in La Jolla, hosted by UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles finish the regular season with an overall record of 11-7-1, and 10-6 in the Conference.

Cal State L.A. kicked off the afternoon's scoring early. Just under six minutes into the game, Hewitt send a Dennis Idrissa pass to the back of the Coyotes' net for his second goal of the season. At the 23:55 mark, Swope gave the Golden Eagles the 2-0 lead and raised his season goal count to three. Morten Marthinsen picked up the assist, his fifth.

After taking the two goal lead into the second half, the Golden Eagles found their lead cut in half just over 75 minutes into the game as the Coyotes were able to get a shot past Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Patrick Fry. For the season, Fry recorded a goals against average of 1.60 in 16 matches and picked up seven wins, three of which were shutouts.

Today's match also marked the conclusion of senior defender Mark Van Gorkom's college soccer career. In 54 starts as a Golden Eagle, Van Gorkom amassed a career point total of 10, including 4 goals, and two assists. His best offensive season was 2005 in which he scored three goals, two of which were game-winners, and an assist in 18 matches.

Up next for the Golden Eagles is the CCAA Championship Tournament in La Jolla. As the CCAA South Division Champions and tournament's number two seed, Cal State L.A. is set to play Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, October 27, at 11 a.m. Should the Golden Eagles defeat the Warriors, they would advance to the CCAA Championship Match, scheduled for Sunday, October 29, at 11:0 a.m. and take on either Cal State Dominguez Hills or Sonoma State.
