LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A. athletics director Dan Bridges and head baseball coach Pat Shine are pleased to announce the hiring of Bob Macaluso as the new Golden Eagle assistant baseball coach.
“Bob will be a fine addition to our staff,” said Bridges. “I'm sure our players will benefit from his expertise and experience.”
“Bob Macaluso is a huge asset to the Cal State L.A. baseball program,” added Shine. “Coach Mac has coached some of the top college baseball players in the country. His experience, knowledge, and passion in development will be a big addition to this program.”
Macaluso has spent many years preparing players to compete at a higher level and he is looking to bring that experience to Cal State L.A. He spent the past eight years as the head baseball coach for the NCAA Division III Muhlenberg College Mules. Prior to Muhlenberg, he served as the assistant coach for Springfield College in Massachusetts. In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, he also serves as the head coach for the Cape Cod Baseball Leauge's Brewster Whitecaps. Macaluso's coaching experience also extends to American Legion Baseball and the high school level.
While at Muhlenberg, from 1998 until 2006, Macaluso guided his team to the finals of the first two Continental Conference Championship Tournaments. In addition, he holds the Mule's single season wins record and ranks second on the school's all-time win list. Prior to Muhlenberg, he spent two seasons as the assistant coach at the NCAA Division III Springfield College in Massachusetts where he was responsible for coaching all aspects of the game.
For the 2000 season, Macaluso joined the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League as an assistant coach. There he was responsible for many duties including serving as hitting coach, third base, and outfield coach. During his stint as hitting coach, his team led the league in that category. In 2000, his first season with the team, the Whitecaps went on to become the Cape Cod League Champions. For the 2003 season, he was promoted to the position of head coach, qualifying for the postseason in three of his four years at the helm. Macaluso , in his time with the team, has had several future Major League Baseball players under his watch.
From 1988 to 1997, he spent time with the American Legion, a national youth baseball organization dedicated to teaching teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership to young ballplayers across the country. From 1993 until 1996, Macaluso prepared young ballplayer for the collegiate ranks as the head coach of the Weston High School team in Massachusetts. Prior to that, he spent four years as assistant coach in the Massachusetts high school ranks.
Macaluso looks to bring his experience of preparing player for the next level to the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. finished tied for ninth in the country for the 2006 season and they look to improve upon that for 2007.
