A former star player at Cal State LA and now a coach with a wealth of experience, Chelsey Ruiz joins the women’s tennis program as an assistant coach.
She is a dedicated tennis coach with a rich background in both playing and coaching and her experience spans across various prestigious programs and institutions, reflecting her passion for developing players at all levels.
Ruiz conducts a variety of clinics and private sessions through the North American Tennis League in Pasadena, catering to players of all ages and skill levels.
She has been an assistant coach at Harvard Westlake High School since last August.
Ruiz was a valued member of Cal State LA’s tennis program for four seasons and achieved a career record of 47-29 in singles. She earned All-PacWest Conference honors, and was ranked 12th in the West Region.
She joined Cal State LA from Bullard High School in Fresno, where she also excelled. Ruiz was an individual league champion from 2012-15 and a CIF individual champion in 2014 and 2015. She helped her team reach the league finals from 2012-15 and she was ranked in the top-35 in California as a junior.
She was also named the Fresno Bee Athlete of the Year in 2015.
Her international coaching experience includes a summer in Zurich, Switzerland, where she served as a summer tennis coach in 2022. She conducted group coaching sessions for diverse age groups, provided personalized instruction to players of varying skill levels, and adapted her coaching methods to effectively communicate with non-English-speaking individuals
As a coach, Ruiz has already compiled an impressive resume of success.
In the summer of 2023, Ruiz took on the role of summer tennis coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. Her holistic approach to player development fostered both skill improvement and a deep passion for the sport, focusing on technical skills, mental resilience, strategic gameplay and physical conditioning.

She was also the Varsity Assistant Tennis Coach at Buchanan High School for the 2021-22 academic year and helped the program win its first-ever league championship and at Immaculate Heart School for the 2022-2023 season
