A three-time All-American and two-time national runner-up in the high jump while a student-athlete at Cal State L.A., Eugene Hutchinson rejoins the track and field program as an assistant coach for jumps, sprints and hurdles. Hutchinson was previously a volunteer assistant coach at Cal State L.A. for two seasons.
He is the school record holder in the high jump at 7-5 and has held the mark since 2006. He finished second in the nation in the high jump in 2005 and 2006 and won conference titles in the event in 2004 and 2006. He won a total of four CCAA titles and eight All-Conference awards during his four years with the program. Hutchinson was the CCAA Freshman of the Year in 2003 and won three conference titles in 2004 in the high jump, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.
Hutchinson also competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and in two United States Track and Field championships.
He is also the head coach of the freshman basketball team at Maranatha High School and the head jumps coach at South Pasadena High School.
Hutchinson earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at Cal State L.A.
