Josh Hopkins

A former student-athlete at Cal State LA, Joshua Hopkins returns for his fourth season with the men’s basketball program as an assistant coach. He has been an instrumental part of the coaching staff in his first three years as a coach. He works with player development, recruiting and film breakdown.

Hopkins helped the Golden Eagles through an injury-plagued 2019-20 season. Cal State LA recorded one of the best non-conference performances in program history that included wins over Azusa Pacific, Biola, Fresno Pacific and Northwest Nazarene. The Golden Eagles were able to qualify for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament for a second straight season.

Hopkins helped the Golden Eagles enjoy one of their best seasons in years in 2018-19. Cal State LA won 18 games – the most for the Golden Eagles since 1999-2000 – and advanced to the CCAA Tournament semi-finals for only the third time in program history.

Hopkins has helped the Golden Eagles to a 44-43 record in his first three years with the program.

Before joining the coaching staff, Hopkins played for three seasons with the Golden Eagles and was known for his exceptional attitude, inspired play and hard-working attitude.

Hopkins competed in 46 games for the Golden Eagles, including 26 in his senior season. He worked his way into the starting lineup and was a starter in 15 of the 26 games as a senior.

Hopkins was Cal State LA’s recipient of the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award in 2017, an award presented for exemplary commitment to athletic and academic pursuits.

Hopkins came to Cal State LA from Mt. San Antonio College, where he was part of a state championship team.

Hopkins also teaches basketball classes at Cal State LA and earned Master’s degrees in Athletics Business Management from Cal State LA and Sports Administration from Arkansas State in 2019. He also received his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology (coaching/community leadership) from Cal State LA with a minor in Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Exercise.
