SEATTLE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team saw its outstanding 2023 season come to an end Saturday in the second round of the NCAA playoffs at Seattle Pacific.
The host Falcons (13-3-5) scored the game's only goal about 10 minutes into the second half and held on for a 1-0 win over the Golden Eagles at Interbay Stadium. Cal State LA (9-3-9) had one the best defensive seasons in program history and tied the program record for fewest goals allowed in a season (10) originally set in 2014.
Taesja Paopao set a new program record with a 0.43 goals against average, breaking the record of 0.46 set by Yi Du in 2014. Her 12 shutouts were one off the program standard of 13 set by
Areli Reyes in 2022 and her save percentage of .886 ties the program record set by Adriana Maldonado in 2018.
The team's goals against average of 0.47 is second all-time, just off the mark of 0.46 set in 2014. Earlier, the Golden Eagles set a new program record with a 15-game unbeaten streak.
This was the third meeting in the NCAA playoffs between Cal State LA and Seattle Pacific and the second win for the Falcons. Seattle Pacific won the West Region championship match over Cal State LA, 2-0, in 2007 in Seattle, while Cal State LA recorded a 2-1 win over Seattle Pacific in 2011 in Los Angeles. This was the first meeting between the two programs since then.
Cal State LA, the No. 3 seed, battled No. 2 Seattle Pacific in a well-played match played in chilly conditions. The Golden Eagles gave up 12 shots in the game, but only four of them were on target. Paopao made three saves, while Seattle Pacific goalkeeper Mercedes Cullen made five saves, including four in the second half.
Seattle Pacific had a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
