SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team saw its hopes for a second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title come to an unfortunate end Friday on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay.
An early second-half goal lifted No. 2 seed Cal State San Marcos past the No. 3 Golden Eagles, 1-0, at Cardinale Stadium. Cal State LA (9-2-8) lost for the first time since Sept. 9 and had a 15-match unbeaten streak snapped by the Cougars (10-2-6), who picked up the first tournament win in program history.
Liliana Gonzalez, who has been brilliant down the stretch, had a strong game for Cal State LA and had all four shots that were credited to the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA, though, had trouble generating consistent offense against the Cougars, who swarmed the Golden Eagles all over the field.
Cal State LA's defense was also outstanding and limited quality scoring chances by Cal State San Marcos. The Golden Eagles' defensive backline of
Jaclyn Orozco,
Thaiz Hernandez,
Destiny Moedano,
Brianna Valdez and
Haley Clark did a solid job of thwarting the Cougars.
Taesja Paopao made three saves for the Golden Eagles and did a masterful job once again of controlling the opponent's corner kick opportunities. Cal State San Marcos went empty on five corner kick attempts, due mainly to Paopao's ability to grab the ball in traffic.
Natalia Huntington scored the game's only goal in the 46th minute for the Cougars with an assist to Lily Jensen.
Cal State San Marcos had a 10-4 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 edge in the second half. The Cougars had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, including a 3-0 advantage in the second half.
Cal State LA, which was ranked No. 3 in the West Region entering this week's play, will now wait to hear if they've reached the NCAA playoffs for a second straight season with the selection show on Monday at 3:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.
