SAN DIEGO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team came up just short in a defensive struggle against Point Loma on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles misfired on a clearance in the 11th minute to account for the only score of the game in a 1-0 loss to the Sea Lions at the PLNU Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (0-1-1), which climbed to No. 14 in the nation in a poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America earlier in the day, had another strong defensive showing, but was unable to generate any offense.
Point Loma (2-1) posted its second shutout in three games.
The game featured only four shots on goal, two by each team. The lone goal came early after a defensive miscue by the Golden Eagles set up Cori Deason, who scored from in front of the goal for her first score of the season.
Point Loma had a 13-7 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 advantage in the first half.
Anahie Duran had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Victoria Arredondo,
Veronika Steen,
Ashli Villalobos and
Selena Cuara had the others.
Cal State L.A. was symied for most of the game by Point Loma's defense, but the Golden Eagles did manage some opportunities down the stretch. A shot by Steen went wide in the 76th minute and a bid by Duran went wide in the 81st minute. Duran had a shot blocked one minute later and a shot by Arredondo was stopped by Point Loma goalie Ariel Oriarte in the 82nd minute. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado made a save in the 84th minute and Duran had a late bid in the 89th minute blocked.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home match against Azusa Pacific beginning at 6 p.m.
